Terminology

Bump
Additional pay for different things while acting which can include:

  • Wardrobe (NYPD Uniform you might have, EMT, Halloween costume)
  • Wet pay (rain or other types of situations)
  • Smoke
  • Travel

Union vs Non-Union
There are a few unions including but not limited to

  • SAG | AFTRA (screen actors guild)
  • FI-CORE

Checking The Gate
When a scene being shot seems to be finished and the camera is being checked before the next scene. The current scene is finished, moving on or a wrap.

Wrap
‘That’s a wrap’ that is the end of the shoot, or your role in the shooting for the production at the time being. ‘you are wrapped’ means you are done for the day and are able to leave even if others are there for a prolonged period of time. This is usually great.

Fitting
When you need to go to wardrobe and be seen so you can fit in background or lead costume. Sometimes you will be asked to bring items of your own, but mostly they will have more of what they need in period or character pieces. I have found casting usually has the wrong information, and you don’t need to over bring your wardrobe. Keep it as minimal as needed from them if possible. That is why it is their job to do wardrobe. Shoes and hats on bigger people might be a smart thing to self bring just in case if listed.

Points

When you hear this term on set, you will know to look around and be careful as some crew member is carrying long poles of some sort of lighting or set design, usually like a lance and they want you to be aware they’re coming past you.
